It took over an hour (and six transfers) before I finally found someone who knew what she was doing.

The answer was to set me up with a new, temporary Boston-area number, then immediately (within about ten minutes) port my old number over. That did the trick.

My phone is now activated, updated to 1.1.3, fully synced, and I'm in the process of customizing things. All is good. Hopefully, I won't have any similar difficulty porting my wife's number over on Friday. We shall see, but I'm very pleased at the moment... :-)
