While I don't have the answer to your RAM question, (I don't beleive anybody does; some searches on Google brought no answers) the crashing you report is common.
It occurred frequently in the earlier firmware versions. Check what firmware you're running. If it's 1.0.2 or below, you need to upgrade to either 1.1.1 or 1.1.2. That takes care of the crashing for most people.
I also found back before 1.1.1 that emptying Safari's cache prevents some crashes.
