It's a know issue. Google is working on it. You may want to use the imap version of gmail. Go to gmail > settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP > choose ENABLE IMAP.
Then uninstal gmail from your iphone and reinstal again. When istalling, DO NOT click the quick install gmail icon. Follow the rest of instructions located here:
