Thanks for getting back to me, Moshe. I ended up doing more research on this issue last night and found a few instances of the same thing happening when plugging the iPhone into an iPod charger. Apparently, old iPod chargers are 10v and new iPod and iPhone chargers are 5v. I basically fried my iPhone battery. I was really worried to take it into Apple because I couldn't restore and I had unlocked my phone, but I called Apple Care and got a case number after explaining what happened. This sped up the process at the Apple Store and the Genius behind the Bar ended up just running some basic diagnostic tests that seemed to be what I was trying at home. Once he couldn't get the normal screen to show up, he told me I was being given a new one. I have it here with me and will never be plugging it into an iPod charger again

Funny thing, though... I overheard the guy working on my iPhone tell another guy that mine was having the same issue as the one he was working on. They ended up switching out both. I received an iPhone with firmware version 1.0.2 even though 1.1.1 is out now, in case anyone is wondering.
