Want tethering but don’t want to fork over to AT&T for it? Well grab Handy Light by Nick Lee. This $0.99 app is by all appearances a flashlight app, but secretly tethers to your phone. Grab it while it’s hot, because it’ll be gone soon.
Here’s a video guide to using it:
Or, here’s a text guide, courtesy of AppShopper:
- Set up an ad hoc Wi-Fi network on your computer (network name and password requirement are not important).
- Connect to the Wi-Fi network you just created on your iPhone through the Settings/Wi-Fi menu.
- Tap on the blue arrow to the right of the selected Wi-Fi network, click Static in the IP Address menu and enter the following IP address and chuckle at its geek quotient: 13.37.13.37
- Next, enter 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet Mask field.
- Back out of the Settings menu to ensure these settings are saved (though hitting the Home button right away shouldn’t change them).
- Go to your Mac or PC and change the network settings to use the SOCKS Proxy and enter 13.37.13.37 as the Socks Proxy Server address and 1337 as the port.
- Be sure to apply/save these settings.
- Go back to your iPhone and open the Handy Light app and tap the flashlight colors at the bottom in the following sequence: blue, yellow, red. Then tap the top right corner of the screen and the color should change to purple. Your iPhone is now capable of sharing its internet connection with the computer you set up.
- Leave the app open and go to your computer and start browsing. As the video describes, we found that it took a few seconds for the connection to kick in but then it worked like a charm. Though many variables affect network speed tests, a quick test using Speedtest.net yielded 3.92 MB/s up and 0.38 MB/s down while tethered to our iPhone 4 through Handy Light.
Be careful though, this will chew through your data plan.

UPDATE: Unsurprisingly, pulled within a couple of hours of posting. I hope you got it, if you want it.
That’s craziness. I wonder how long before it’s pulled?
probably not long now
Pain in the ass the real tethering is so simple. This flashlight version is the same method that netshare did before it got pulled. It works but it’s cumbersome. Glad I still have netshare.
Does netshare still work?
Not a secret anymore haha
Does it work for tethering to ipad?
I can confirm this works on my iPhone 4 with 4.0. Awesome. Thanks.
Gone!
Its already down. It says this item no longer available for download.
Wow, I must have gotten it minutes before it went down.
looks fake. Watch when he transitions from setting up a static IP and Subnet on the iphone. The settings go from Static to Dynamic. Stop the vid and scrub it back and forth. Either the video is a bad edit for this whole thing is a ploy to sell a stupid flashlight app
i have a download link if anyone wants it…the only thing is i have no idea how to get it into itunes….if you can figure that out, that would be great. message me on EIC if you want the link (mcaram16)
