We all understand that yesterday broke the bank for AT&T and Apple, sending servers down faster than Glass Joe. The immense success — and failures — of yesterday’s pre-sales have led to some interesting side effects.
By far the most worrying consequence has been the possible security breaches that arose from the bruised servers. Reports have arisen that users were getting other people’s credit card and shipping information appearing while attempting to order. AT&T has responded by saying:
We have received reports of customers inadvertently seeing the wrong account information during the iPhone 4 purchasing process. We have been unable to replicate the issue, but the information displayed did not include call-detail records, social security numbers, or credit card information. In the meantime, we are looking into this matter.
In the meanwhile, Ma Bell has suspended all orders for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. In an internal memo, they said:
Pre-orders for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS 8GB are Temporarily SuspendedEffective close of business on June 15, 2010, the ability to place pre-orders (new activations, upgrades and exchanges) has been temporarily suspended. There is a special team that will be manually working all pre-orders from June 15th that were held in a pending status. Under no circumstances should new pre-orders be attempted in the system. This suspension impacts Phoenix, Premier, OPUS (COR), and System X (DMDR).Please stay tuned to future bulletin communications for any updates.
Assumedly, they’re attempting to sort out their server woes and get through the backlog before starting again.
On a more positive note, Gene Munster has now predicted 9.5 million sales in the June quarter due to the immense success of the first day of pre-orders, of which he believes 1.4 million will be upgrades.
