Arstechnica has uncovered an FCC filing for an updated Apple TV. The already diminutive Apple TV measures in at 3.9-inches squared, with the new version coming in at 3.69-inches. More importantly, there are some notable changes to the guts that should result in performance boosts in key areas.
It transitions to the A5X SoC from the A5 resulting in a vastly upgraded GPU to the quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP4. The utility of having this powerful chip is still a relative unknown, but perhaps Apple will at some point open up the Apple TV to apps that could take advantage of the processing power.
Also of note is upgraded WiFi and Bluetooth chip from Broadcom.
Apple has announced when this new model would begin shipping. If you were planning on picking up an ATV 2, you might want to hold off, as these improvements won’t hurt your wallet any more than the current $99 price point.
