Developers are now using SEO (search engine optimization) techniques to improve their search rankings within Apple’s App Store. This is the latest in an effort by developers to find their way in the hearts, minds and wallets of consumers. We previously reported on developers using product icons to display promotions. With some developers making millions off the App Store, the stakes are high.

According to Tapbots, developers are padding the description of their apps to include names of unrelated applications that also happen to be best seller. Do a search for Ocarina and you’ll find several applications that have no place in the search result. A quick look at their product description will likely reveal a list of applications that are completely unrelated, but are placed there for SEO purposes.
It appears the time has come for Apple to take more control of product descriptions. It’s deceptive and results in a less than perfect search result.
