Check Out The Early Prototypes Of The iPad And iPhone

The Apple/Samsung legal battle seems like its been going for an eternity, with very little interesting coming of it. However, the last couple of days have been incredibly interesting, because the early designs of both devices have come to light. Earlier this month we heard about Prototype 035, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

First spotted by the Verge (1, 2) and also Buzzfeed, these iPhone and iPad concepts show an incredible look at what went on when the first designs of both of these devices were kicking about. Perhaps the most damning is on the iPhone front, where designers were told to specifically reference Sony like devices, with that design eventually becoming the iPhone 4.

There are also iPads with kickstands — something I can’t believe Jobs would even have a second look at; a device with a much thinner shape and smaller, half screen; and an octagonal bevelled version.

I can’t say I really understand how much of a legal impact these releases will have, but from a design perspective, it’s incredibly interesting to see what went in to making our favorite iOS devices.
