With the new iPhone 5 expected to be announced on September 12th, with a release date shortly thereafter, many of you would like to check your iPhone 5 upgrade eligibility on AT&T and Verizon. The process is very simple and takes a matter of minutes.
Check upgrade eligibility on AT&T
On your iPhone, dial *639#. You won’t actually be speaking to anyone. This will generate a message to AT&T regarding your request. You should see the following message on your iPhone.
Thank you, your request is being processed. A message will be sent to your phone.
Within a matter of minutes, you’ll receive a text message from AT&T which will indicate your account status. If you upgraded to the iPhone 4S, you might receive a message similar to the one below.
A full discount on a standard device or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 06/05/2013. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at 2-yr commitment price + $250 along with a new 2-year commitment and an $36 upgrade fee. Please visit a participating iPhone sales location for pricing on this offer.
Check upgrade eligibility on Verizon
On your iPhone, dial #874. Similar to the AT&T process above, you’ll receive a text message regarding your iPhone 5 upgrade eligibility.
With the big day coming, are you eligible for an upgrade? Let us know in the comments.

I got the above message. I am not a happy camper. The additional $250 is not cool. It would be cool if at the last minute Apple instructs AT&T to change this. I would love a full discount.
Greedy S.O.B.s! Maybe its time to bite the bullit & switch to Verizon?
Verizon is in the process of screwing over my 91 y/o mother. Verizon should be put out of business… once and for all… and they can bury the CDMA ancient technology also.
Why do you expect AT&T to pay out $500 for you to get an iPhone, then do the same thing a year later? There’s a reason why cell phone plans are so high, because everyone wants new phones all the time and subsidies are killing carriers.
Got the same message. I will have to wait until May unless AT&T changes the date. I may just skip the 5 and wait for the next one.
Same here, got the 4S in Oct and my text said May. I’ll probably buy it either way… too antsy to wait.
