Riders of the MBTA Commuter Rail in Boston are about to get a high-tech way to pay for their tickets. UK company Masabi is set to launch a smartphone based ticketing system, mirroring similar ones they’ve worked on in Europe. With applications for Android, Blackberry, and iPhone, travelers will be able to purchase their tickets using credit or debit cards, and just have a barcode beeped on the train.
This is designed for the Commuter Rail, which doesn’t have ticketing machines at each stop, but with any luck it’ll spread to the entire T, allowing everyone in Boston to get in on the action.
