Apple Countersues Nokia

Saturday, December 12th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

In October, Nokia sued Apple over 10 patents, which they claim Apple is using in the iPhone without proper licensing. Today, Apple countersued over 13 patents, though we don’t know precisely which ones yet. The full press release follows, and is only notable for a bit of a zinger tucked in the middle.

CUPERTINO, California—December 11, 2009—Responding to a lawsuit brought against the company by Nokia, Apple® today filed a countersuit claiming that Nokia is infringing 13 Apple patents.

“Other companies must compete with us by inventing their own technologies, not just by stealing ours,” said Bruce Sewell, Apple’s General Counsel and senior vice president.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.

AT&T Responds To Verizon Attack Ads By Lauding Edge

Friday, November 13th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

AT&T has been remarkably displeased by Verizon’s “There’s a map for that” ad campaign, going so far as to sue the other teleco over pointing out their 3G deficiencies. AT&T have now released an official statement about the differences in their coverage, which can be summarized as “oh yeah, well we have EDGE, and that’s just as good, so there!” Except, well, it isn’t. The press release says

With both 3G and EDGE coverage, customers can access the Internet, send e-mail, surf the Web, stream music, download videos, send photos, text, talk and more. The only difference – with some data applications, 3G is faster than EDGE

To put it bluntly, EDGE is almost unusable for most tasks, and AT&T’s 3G is so mediocre that it’s often not much better. You aren’t really helping yourself here, guys.

Apple May Countersue Nokia

Friday, November 6th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

Reports are starting to surface that Apple may go swinging into the battle with Nokia, by filing counter-suits. Reuters says it would not be unexpected for Apple to countersue over patents it believes Nokia is violating. This will most likely be posturing to try and improve their position in the legal fight, rather than any true belief that Nokia was using Apple tech improperly. On the defensive front, Apple will most likely question the validity of Nokia’s patents, to try and get themselves off the hook.

The legal battle is expected to last 2-3 years, and Nokia is expected to try and get $200 million to $1 billion out of Apple.

Nokia Sues Apple Over Patents in iPhone

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

Cellphone giant Nokia has filed suit against Apple for 10 patents, that they allege the iPhone infringes. The patents related to technology that Nokia claims are required in a modern device to make it compatible with other phones. These claims include patents for GSM, UMTS and WLAN which are used for wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption. Nokia is suing for every iPhone shipped, for a total of around $200 million, according to The Business Insider . The Finnish company has licensed these technologies to approximately 40 companies, but evidently Apple was not one of them.
