Live Nation have access to recordings from artists such as OK Go, Jesse McCartney, Saving Abel, A Fine Frenzy, Duffy, Plain White T’s and Ziggy Marley. iTunes Gains In-Browser Preview

Friday, November 13th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

iTunes is overhauling their in-browser link service, and phasing out forcing you to launch iTunes. Previously, whenever you clicked an iTunes link, the application itself would launch (or ask you to install it). The new loads an in-browser preview, with reviews, track lists, and other information. Unfortunately, you can’t preview any of the tracks through this method, you still have to use the iTunes store for that. So if you follow this link for 65daysofstatic’s excellent Escape From New York, you should get a feel for what the service offers. At present, this feature only works for music, but we hope it will roll out for iPhone apps soon, and help us avoid the annoying unwanted iTunes launch.

iTunes Moves Into Music Movies

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

Apple has rolled out a new “Music Movies” page on iTunes, filled with back stage videos, concerts, documentaries, musicals, and films with a strong music link (think Staying Alive). The movies’ purchase price ranges from $5-$15, in general. According to Billboard.biz, Apple is also trying to get rights to music related content before it comes on DVD. If Cupertino succeeds in this endeavour, it will be interesting to see if they try and arrange something similar for feature films. Being able to get a movie on iTunes before it hits DVD is one less reason to even think about leaving the house.

Apple Releases iTunes 9.0.2 Update, Kills Palm Pre Sync Dead

Thursday, October 29th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

Apple today released iTunes 9.0.2, a minor update aimed at providing support for today’s Apple TV 3.0 software update. While they were at it, Apple also killed Palm’s webOS Media Sync dead. We’ve speculated before that perhaps Palm would grow tired of the inevitable, but they continue to pump out webOS updates that re-enable media syncing with the Pre, so we’re expecting they’ll have an update soon enough. Of course, Apple will then kill it dead and we’ll report on it here. The dance my friends is growing old.

Those planted firmly in the Apple camp should have no worries about updating to the latest version of iTunes. Here’s a brief overview of what’s included in iTunes 9.0.2.

iTunes 9.0.2 adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improves support for accessibility.

Creating and Using Custom Ringtones

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 by Marianne Schultz

Last week, we covered getting started with your new iPhone to kick off our Learning iPhone series. This week, we’ll talk about doing a little personalization to get some custom ringtones on it for you and how to assign different ringtones to your contacts.

The ringtone you choose to use for your iPhone can be a very personal choice for many. Some like to hear a favorite song every time their phone rings while others prefer more traditional ring sounds. Whatever your preference is, know that you’re not limited to the 25 ringtones that are on the iPhone out of the box - you can add many more and even set a specific ringtone for each contact in your Contacts list so that you know who’s calling without even needing to look at your iPhone. There are a number of ways to get custom ringtones. Some are easy yet expensive while others are a bit more complicated and cheap or even free. We’re going to cover a few options along this spectrum. First, we’ll start out with the easiest yet most expensive way: buying prepared ringtones through iTunes.

Getting Started with iPhone

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 by Marianne Schultz

Did you just get an iPhone and are you wondering what to do with this marvelous piece of technology? Well, you’ve come to the right place! It’s probably very different from any other cell phone you’ve used before but its user interface is quite intuitive out of the box, but it can take a little work to get it up and running with all of your media, email, and more. Let’s get started!

First, one important reference item for you to download and/or bookmark: the iPhone User Guide. Presumably in order to save space and a few trees, iPhones don’t come with a manual in the box - you only get a brief guide called “Finger Tips” and small product guide that contains all of the legally-required warnings and certifications. But rest assured that there is a full User Guide that has a lot of useful information in it and you can find it here.

Before you dive into the guide, let’s take a moment to map out what you need to get your iPhone up and running with everything you need on it from the get-go. Probably the item that needs the most preparation is if you want to be able to access a work email account on your iPhone, since you may need to see your company’s IT department first. Other than this, you may want to check that you have all of the music, videos, and photos you’d like to have on your iPhone ready on the computer with which you’ll be synchronizing it.

Ready to get started? Okay! Get that shiny iPhone out of its box and take a moment to enjoy it’s sleek loveliness.

Apple To Extend European iTunes In 2010

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

Following a meeting with European competition regulators, Apple is “optimistic” about extending the reach of iTunes in Europe next year. The meeting was arranged between a variety of online music providers, to set up a common road map for providing their services. The joint statement can be read here.

Presently, iTunes exists in France, Germany, UK,  Austria, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and Denmark. Many of these nations don’t have localized languages in their version, and iTunes videos are also lacking.

Also involved in the meeting was Amazon, BEUC, EMI, Nokia, PRS for Music, SACEM, STIM and Universal. Hopefully this will mean our European readers will have readier access to the iTunes store before long.

AT&T Launching MMS Tomorrow

Thursday, September 24th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

The long overdue introduction of MMS for the iPhone is scheduled to happen tomorrow, sometime in the late morning (PST). Those of us on the east coast won’t wake up to MMS. The update will require you update a carrier file, so expect an iTunes update sometime tomorrow. AT&T released this official statement via their Facebook page:

MMS Update: We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25. Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready to download through iTunes. We’ll provide the steps and all of the details you need right here at that time.

In another report, DSLReports claims (via MR) that a source within AT&T says the company is extremely nervous about the launch, pointing to the strain on MMS servers that’s likely to occur when the free-for-all ensues.

Apple To Offer Ready Made Ringtones

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

Apple has reportedly secured rights to offer ready-made ringtones for the iPhone according to music industry sources. While iPhone owners can create their own ringtones within iTunes, the ready-made ringtones would simplify the process and likely see brisk sales.

Apple is expected to announce the availability at next week’s “Rock and Roll” event. Be sure to check back on September 9th for our “not so live, live blog” of the event.

So would you purchase ready-made ringtones? Have you created any ringtones through iTunes or another application such as Garage Band,  iToner or iPhoneRingtoneMaker? Let us know in the comments.

Apple Releases iTunes, Breaks Palm Pre Syncing

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

Apple today release an update to iTunes, version 8.2.1. According to Apple, iTunes version 8.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices. The update breaks the ability of the Palm Pre to sync with iTunes, so clearly Apple was none too please with Palm’s making the Pre appear as if it were an iPod within iTunes.
