AT&T Can’t Take Down Verizon Ads, Goes On Advertising Offensive

Thursday, November 19th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

AT&T’s injunction to get Verizon’s “There’s An App For That” ads pulled off air was denied by a judge on Wednesday. He refused to pull the ads, saying “[that] people might misunderstand the commercials, but that doesn’t mean they’re misleading.” In other words, put up or shut up. The judge has allowed for a follow up, scheduled for December 16, but until then AT&T has gone on an advertising offensive. They’re showing an ad called “Side by Side”, starring a rather pudgy looking Luke Wilson, comparing the features of AT&T vs. Verizon. It seems that half of AT&Ts advantages come directly from the iPhone, and they would automatically lose them if they were no longer sole provider.

AT&T Improves Network…In One City

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

AT&T are dealing with the quadrupling in wireless traffic by rolling out substantial increases in 3G coverage. In San Francisco. I mean, yeah that’s great to everyone who lives in the Bay Area, but seriously? That’s how AT&T is dealing with the mammoth amount of bad press they’re getting about mediocre 3G coverage and constantly dropped calls in major urban centers? By fixing it one city? What about the rest of the country?

Frankly, AT&T have no cause to be bitching about heavy usage. They fought for the iPhone exclusive knowing it would be huge, and knowing that users would be using a smartphone for the internet and data transfer. My sympathy for them is extremely limited.

Verizon Responds To AT&T Lawsuit: “The Truth Hurts”

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

Verizon have come out swinging in defense of their “there’s a map for that” ad campaign. In a response to the suit filed by AT&T, Verizon have said:

AT&T did not file this lawsuit because Verizon’s “There’s A Map For That” advertisements are untrue; AT&T sued because Verizon’s ads are true and the truth hurts…AT&T failed to invest adequately in the necessary infrastructure to expand its 3G coverage to support its growth in smartphone business, and the usefulness of its service to smartphone users has suffered accordingly.

Damn, I believe the official scientific term for that, is a “sick burn”. Maybe AT&T should take some of their legal fees, and try and get some wider and higher quality 3G going.

AT&T Responds To Verizon Attack Ads By Lauding Edge

Friday, November 13th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

AT&T has been remarkably displeased by Verizon’s “There’s a map for that” ad campaign, going so far as to sue the other teleco over pointing out their 3G deficiencies. AT&T have now released an official statement about the differences in their coverage, which can be summarized as “oh yeah, well we have EDGE, and that’s just as good, so there!” Except, well, it isn’t. The press release says

With both 3G and EDGE coverage, customers can access the Internet, send e-mail, surf the Web, stream music, download videos, send photos, text, talk and more. The only difference – with some data applications, 3G is faster than EDGE

To put it bluntly, EDGE is almost unusable for most tasks, and AT&T’s 3G is so mediocre that it’s often not much better. You aren’t really helping yourself here, guys.

Verizon Holiday Ads Attack AT&T Service, iPhone

Sunday, November 8th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

Verizon smells blood in the water and appear to have seized the moment with a new round of There’s a map for that holiday ads. One goes as far as to place the iPhone on the “Island of Misfit Toys”. Clever, entertaining, but will they stop people from buying iPhones? We’re not so sure.

AT&T Gets Permission To Swallow Another Provider

Sunday, November 8th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

AT&T continues their borg-like plans to swallow every other teleco they can get their paws on, with the seeming goal to recreate the Ma Bell monopoly. The latest company on their menu is Centennial Wireless, who have a 900,000 strong subscriber base. The FCC have just given AT&T the go ahead, and they will pay out stockholders at $8.50 per share, and AT&T will purchase the company for $944 million. I guess that means a customer is worth around $100 to the megacorp. AT&T claims the acquisition will boost their coverage over the  Midwest and Southeast United States and in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

AT&T To Get 8GB 3GS?

Thursday, November 5th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

BGR is reporting that AT&T may get an upgrade to their base level iPhone, and bring in a new 8GB iPhone 3GS for $99. This would replace the current, entry level $99 8GB 3G just in time for the holidays. Bumping up the entry level would be a good move for people who are eyeing up a new phone, and the improved hardware might just be enough to pull even more people into the iPhone camp. $99 for an iPhone with all the extras that 3GS provides is a rather tempting proposition. What would also be interesting, is if the iPhone does open to Verizon, but only AT&T gets the 8GB 3GS as a parting gift, they would be able to keep hold of people who don’t want to spend a fortune on their phones.

AT&T Sues Verizon Over “There’s A Map For That”, Their Own Crummy Service

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

AT&T are suing Verizon over their recent “there’s a map for that” ad campaign, which painted a rather dim view of AT&T’s 3G coverage. AT&T has made the move because they believe the comparison maps imply that there is no coverage in the white zones, when in fact there’s no 3G coverage there, just 2.5G or Edge. So they’re not denying their 3G coverage is piss poor, but rather maintaining that at least they have something. Verizon have already slightly altered the ads to make them less inflammatory, by removing the words “out of touch” when referring to the non-3G areas, and adding some fine print at the end. Mostly, it just seems AT&T wants these ads off the air, as they expose some severe deficiencies in their coverage.

Blacksn0w Enables Tethering on iPhone 3G/3GS

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

While we wait for the official tethering from AT&T, it appears that Blacksn0w brought more than just carrier unlocking goodness today. With the use of Blacksn0w, you can also activate unauthorized tethering using iPhone OS 3.1.2. We in no way are recommending and/or suggesting you go this route. AT&T will likely be contacting Cupertino for a software update pronto that disables all the hard work of Geohot, the enterprising young gentleman who develops all this crazy software.

The usual disclaimers in tow (if AT&T finds out your tethering, you’ll likely have some explaining to do along with  pretty earthshattering data charges), Mobile Crunch has a tutorial on how to enable tethering on an iPhone 3G or 3GS running 3.1.2.

Let’s hope this encourages AT&T to announce official support in the near term and let’s make it affordable.
