Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

Concert promoter Live Nation have brokered a deal with Apple to bring live concerts to iTunes. In a press release issued today, the company said they would be bringing recordings from their wired gigs to iTunes for download and purchase. Live Nation have access to recordings from artists such as OK Go, Jesse McCartney, Saving Abel, A Fine Frenzy, Duffy, Plain White T’s and Ziggy Marley. A number of concerts are already up in the Live Music area of iTunes, at $8 to buy and $4 to rent. iTunes Gains In-Browser Preview

Friday, November 13th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

iTunes is overhauling their in-browser link service, and phasing out forcing you to launch iTunes. Previously, whenever you clicked an iTunes link, the application itself would launch (or ask you to install it). The new loads an in-browser preview, with reviews, track lists, and other information. Unfortunately, you can’t preview any of the tracks through this method, you still have to use the iTunes store for that. So if you follow this link for 65daysofstatic’s excellent Escape From New York, you should get a feel for what the service offers. At present, this feature only works for music, but we hope it will roll out for iPhone apps soon, and help us avoid the annoying unwanted iTunes launch.

BIOS Update Fixes Some Windows 7/iPhone Sync Issues

Monday, November 9th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

The upgrade to Windows 7 hasn’t been a perfectly smooth ride for all iPhone users, as some computers with the Intel P55 chipset can’t sync with their phone. Companies are starting to deal with the issue, and motherboard manufacturer Gigabyte have released a BIOS update which fixes the problem. While the BIOS update is only a beta, it seems to fix the issue with hardware they produced. ASUS and MSI apparently have the same issue, but have yet to provide any sort of fix. For those worried about flashing their BIOS, especially with a beta, a workaround exists by running iTunes in Vista SP2 compatibility mode.

80% of Apps Suck, According to Appsfire

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

Appsfire just released some interesting numbers, to tie in with the recent passing of 100,000 apps in the app store.

media_httpfarm3staticflickrcom2711404976532657845ded6fojpg_fjbhapzuacgmgee

  • For the vast majority of apps, a whopping 80%, have almost no install base. That’s 80,000 that are found in almost no phones.
  • Only the top 5 apps are in 50% of all iPhones
  • App at rank 1000 is found in 1.76% of phones. There are another 99,000 apps that are found in fewer than this.

Appsfire raises the very good point that the massive dropoff is partly due to the fact that iTunes really isn’t set up to help you find new programs. It doesn’t help you find new and interesting programs tucked amongst the detritus, but pushes ones that are already high selling.

iTunes Moves Into Music Movies

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

Apple has rolled out a new “Music Movies” page on iTunes, filled with back stage videos, concerts, documentaries, musicals, and films with a strong music link (think Staying Alive). The movies’ purchase price ranges from $5-$15, in general. According to Billboard.biz, Apple is also trying to get rights to music related content before it comes on DVD. If Cupertino succeeds in this endeavour, it will be interesting to see if they try and arrange something similar for feature films. Being able to get a movie on iTunes before it hits DVD is one less reason to even think about leaving the house.

Apple Releases iTunes 9.0.2 Update, Kills Palm Pre Sync Dead

Thursday, October 29th, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

Apple today released iTunes 9.0.2, a minor update aimed at providing support for today’s Apple TV 3.0 software update. While they were at it, Apple also killed Palm’s webOS Media Sync dead. We’ve speculated before that perhaps Palm would grow tired of the inevitable, but they continue to pump out webOS updates that re-enable media syncing with the Pre, so we’re expecting they’ll have an update soon enough. Of course, Apple will then kill it dead and we’ll report on it here. The dance my friends is growing old.

Those planted firmly in the Apple camp should have no worries about updating to the latest version of iTunes. Here’s a brief overview of what’s included in iTunes 9.0.2.

iTunes 9.0.2 adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improves support for accessibility.

Google May Start Music Service

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

A number of sources have told TechCrunch that Google will soon be starting a music service. At this point, information is incredibly scarce. If the sources are to be believed, Google has been romancing major labels to get music for the launch. One source gave the name of this new service as “Google Audio” which would fit with Google’s barebones naming policy. Right now, nobody knows if this service will be streaming, download, free or paid. We’re hoping for high-quality, low cost, legal, DRM free, MP3s. We’ll be sure to report more as it develops.

Update: TechCrunch is now reporting that Google has joined forces with iLike and LaLa for this new service. iLike was recently purchased by MySpace, which adds an interesting extra player to the mix, as many bands are still based on that network. The partnership is planning a major event for Wednesday, October 28.

Apple To Extend European iTunes In 2010

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 by Tim Barribeau

Following a meeting with European competition regulators, Apple is “optimistic” about extending the reach of iTunes in Europe next year. The meeting was arranged between a variety of online music providers, to set up a common road map for providing their services. The joint statement can be read here.

Presently, iTunes exists in France, Germany, UK,  Austria, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and Denmark. Many of these nations don’t have localized languages in their version, and iTunes videos are also lacking.

Also involved in the meeting was Amazon, BEUC, EMI, Nokia, PRS for Music, SACEM, STIM and Universal. Hopefully this will mean our European readers will have readier access to the iTunes store before long.

Apple To Offer Ready Made Ringtones

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009 by Christopher Meinck

Apple has reportedly secured rights to offer ready-made ringtones for the iPhone according to music industry sources. While iPhone owners can create their own ringtones within iTunes, the ready-made ringtones would simplify the process and likely see brisk sales.

Apple is expected to announce the availability at next week’s “Rock and Roll” event. Be sure to check back on September 9th for our “not so live, live blog” of the event.

So would you purchase ready-made ringtones? Have you created any ringtones through iTunes or another application such as Garage Band,  iToner or iPhoneRingtoneMaker? Let us know in the comments.

iTunes 9 rumored to include Blu-ray support, iPhone App organization

Sunday, August 9th, 2009 by Marianne Schultz

ituneslogoBoy Genius has reported on a tip about the next update to iTunes that may include Blu-ray support as well as a method by which iPhone and iPod touch users can visually organize apps directly on their computer.

No computer in Apple’s current line-up offers Blu-ray support at this time, though recent rumors point to an update to the iMac to include it. BGR’s source also mentioned that iTunes 9 will include some sort of social networking integration, though the specifics of this are unknown. When it comes to arranging apps, iPhone and iPod touch users can currently only accomplish this on the device directly, which can be difficult when moving apps across several home screen pages. BGR’s “pretty reliable source” states that iTunes 9 “will finally include the ability to visually organize and arrange your iPhone and iPod touch applications.”

iTunes is currently at version number 8.2.1 and a release date for the rumored iTunes 9 is not yet known. However, Apple has held an iPod-focused event in September in past years and such an event would be an ideal time to announce an iTunes upgrade. Apple has not yet made an announcement about an event in September this year, though this is not out of line with previous behavior, with event invitations going out around only one week in advance in the past.
