Even though the Chinese iPhone had a decidedly poor showing at launch, provider Unicom is predicting great things for the handset. The chairman of the company has stated he thinks the iPhone will be the highest selling of all Chinese smartphones, and with it they plan to grab 10% of the 3G market in the next two or three years. These rosy predictions are hampered by the fact that the official iPhone price in China is more than USD$1000 without a contract, and the handsets are crippled to remove WiFi. Due to this, there is a booming market it grey market iPhones, sourced internationally, without the restrictions and that come at a lower price.

Korean regulators have finally given the go-ahead to Apple to start selling the iPhone in Korea. The Korean Communications Commission said it would grant Apple’s South Korean unit a licence that “allows collecting information on locations and provide services such as map, phone locating and related marketing.”
The phone will definitely be sold by KT Corp, the number 2 carrier in South Korea, and number 1 (SK Telecom) is trying to obtain the rights. KT Corp said they will start selling the phone soon, but didn’t give a firm date. Korean news source the Chosun Ilbo believes that presales will start on November 28, with prices between W250,000 and W300,000 ($215-$250), so expect the handsets to hit soon.

Over the weekend, 4,000 brand new iPhones were stolen from a Belgian warehouse, in what police believe to be an inside job. The overall valuation of the goods sits at around 2 million Euro, which means they’re claiming insurance of 500 Euro per phone. If you’re Belgian, and waiting for an iPhone, don’t despair as apparently more will be on their way in time for the holidays. Just keep your eye out for dodgy unlocked models flooding the grey market now. Apparently, the heist appeared to be an inside job, as a hole was cut in the warehouse ceiling, directly above where the phones were being stored. I say just sic Jean-Claud Van Damme on the thieves, he’ll track them down.

A team from SMobile Systems have managed to create an exploit that breaks through the iPhone’s security when transmitting over WiFi. The exploit is a “man-in-the-middle” type, in which data travelling over unsecured WiFi is intercepted and re-routed. Using the applications Arpspoof and SSLStrip, they managed to get hold of data from Mail and Safari, and from that gain access to email addresses and passwords. The report suggests caution when using open WiFi locations, and that sensitive data should be encrypted. If you feel like making yourself more paranoid about smartphone security (not just the iPhone), you can read the full white paper here.

According to EU law, all devices sold must be covered for two years after purchase. Apple only offers one year on the iPhone, which leaves the retail outlet to cover issues after that time period. In Norway, this extends to five years, creating a substantial gap in the coverage provided by Apple, and that their resellers have to cover. All things considered, I think that shifting to a more consumer friendly, European style of protection probably wouldn’t be a bad thing. Plus, then there would be stronger anti-monopoly laws, and limits to compulsory contract lengths, both of which would help get more users onto the iPhone, and offer them more control over what to do with it.

Yes, we all know there are more than 100,000 apps available in the App Store now. Practically an app to fill your every need has been developed and listed on iTunes—but in an increasingly inefficient way. Besides searching for the top paid or free apps in a specific category, there’s virtually no way to sift through thousands of apps to figure out which ones are worth the downloads and which ones are just out to steal your buck. So you’re looking for something that will sift through all the App Store noise? There’s an app for that.
Chorus, a social networking app released in November, allows users to connect with others to share their download history and recommend or review apps for their friends to see. The social networking aspect is highlighted here, with Facebook and Twitter features to allow your friends and followers to read your reviews and see what you’ve downloaded recently. The attempt at giving iPhone users something to navigate the App Store better is an admirable one, but there are a few kinks that may make Chorus virtually unusable for a lot of users.

A French businessman whose iPhone screen spontaneously shattered has called for an independent inquiry into the device’s safety, and if he can continue to use iPhones. Apple is fighting the request, as the whole case is currently under investigation for fraud. It turns out that there’s been a rash of exploding iPhone touchscreens in France, but oddly, nowhere else. One gentleman even claims that the detonated screen cut his face. Seeing as this problem hasn’t been reported anywhere else–not even the litigious happy USA–either the people of France have high yield explosives for fingertips, or else this is a series of copycat frauds.

The iPhone is great device that can do so much for you – beyond just being a cell phone, it can be your dedicated iPod and gaming device as well as your PDA and all-around communicator to handle text messaging, e-mail, and instant messaging. Given this, the chances you’ll end up using it a lot throughout the day can be pretty high, and unless you’re constantly near a power source and can charge its battery, your iPhone may run out of juice before the day is over. This installment in our Learning iPhone series will give you some tips on how to increase your iPhone’s battery life.

Some of the battery maximization tips we’ll talk about are pretty extreme in that they could hamper how you typically use your iPhone, while others are minor and may not even be noticeable to you. We’ll categorize our tips along this continuum.
