Apple Officially Hits Over 100,000 Apps

Though it’s been rumored for a while, now it’s official, the app store a passed the 100,000 approved apps roadmark. Beyond that, there are apparently 2 billion downloads, which gives a mean of 2,000 downloads an app. The 100,00 mark isn’t a great surprise, as various app tracker websites have been touting the number for a while now. The real question, is how many off those apps are useless shovelware that exists solely to clog our searches for apps that are actually useful?

I think the App store is destined to become obsolete as the “open garden” mindset takes hold. There are so many good web based apps that will work on any phone that I think the whole download app thing will fade away when 4g hits.
