The Belkin Grip Candy Sheer Case for iPhone 5 aims to find the right mix of minimal protection with good looks. On the packaging, it reads “Inspired By You, Designed By Belkin”. So is it inspired enough to be the right case for you. Read on for our comprehensive Belkin Grip Candy Sheer iPhone 5 case review, complete with photo gallery.
The bright vivid packaging is appropriate considering the array of fluorescent colors that team up in a two-tone casing. Belkin describes this as a glossy case, but that seems to be a stretch when looking at the Glow/Blacktop (code for neon green, black). Both the bumper and back of the case seem more of the matte variety.
This is a one piece construction which easily snaps onto your iPhone 5. The backing is not a hard plastic and it’s flexible. The TPU band that wraps the sides of the iPhone 5 acts as a bumper. It has a bit of girth to it, which will be welcome should your iPhone 5 hit a hard surface. From a visual perspective, this case fits well. There is no spacing between the slightly raised bezel and the screen, which should help protect the display if facing flat on a surface. I found that when I grab the iPhone 5 from the bottom, there is a bit of give between the Belkin Grip Candy and the phone. Oddly enough, it’s pretty much isolated to the bottom and not at the top. I’ve seen similar issues with other iPhone 5 cases including the Poetic Atmosphere. You can expect low-moderate protection from the Belkin Grip Candy Sheer case.
Save for the power, volume buttons, all of the ports are exposed and accessible. Buttons where there is TPU are slightly more difficult to press. The ringer switch also has a smaller open area than I would have liked, which may spell trouble for those with large hands. Cut-outs on the bottom are precise, so while you’ll be able to use the Lightning connector, it’s doubtful that the 30-pin adapter would work with this case.
The highlight on this case is the bumper. Our review unit was the Blacktop/Glow and the green really works well on a black iPhone 5. The Belkin logo is beveled on one side. It’s subtle and well done. The bright colored bumper design stands out, while the translucent backing doesn’t reveal much.
If you’re looking for a case that shows the Apple logo, this isn’t it. Belkin calls it glossy, I call it matte. In all honesty it’s somewhere in between. I say this because you don’t get the super grippy feel you would find with a purely matte finish. The upside of this being it’s easy to take in and out of your pockets. With regular usage, the case itself help up well, looking no different from when it was first opened.
- Great colors, finish on bumper
- Adds low to moderate protection
- Not tight at bottom of the iPhone
- Back is not very translucent
The Belkin Grip Candy Sheer succeeds in delivering modest protection in a slim, colorful case. Issues with fit were minor, with the overall fit being more than acceptable for most. The color choices and semi-matte finish look great, but as noted, the backing is not translucent enough to where you can see the Apple logo. This case is a good option for someone who prefers the look of a bumper case, but requires protection for the back of the iPhone 5.
The Belkin Grip Candy Sheer Case for iPhone 5 retails between $16 and $18 on Amazon depending on color combination.
