It’s become a running punchline, that iOS 6 Maps is so bad that’ll lead to you being stranded or lost somewhere. But while many are actually having very little trouble with the app, it does appear that there has been at least a few cases of people getting dangerously lost thanks to Map’s recommendations. A number of stranded travelers in Australia have caused the Victoria Police to issue an official warning about using Maps.
Apparently, instead of directing travelers to the city of Mildura, it directs them around 45 miles away, into the middle of nowhere in a remote park, with extreme heat, little water, and no cellphone coverage.
Police are extremely concerned as there is no water supply within the Park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees (115°F), making this a potentially life threatening issue.
Some of the motorists located by police have been stranded for up to 24 hours without food or water and have walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get phone reception.
The police have contacted Apple to attempt to rectify this information. Obviously, Apple has some pretty bad data about the location of the city, or else it’s latching on to something else with a similar name. Here’s hoping it gets fixed before any more travelers get stranded.
