According to the folks over at Gearlog, the $30 per month 3G iPad connection on AT&T might be very different to the iPhone plans — it actually does what it says on the packet. For every other data plan on AT&T (and indeed, most other companies), while they say unlimited, they actually cap you at 5GB or there abouts, a move which leads many to question why they call it ‘unlimited’ to begin with.
So while you’re limited on how much data you can stream on your iPhone, AT&T’s Mark Siegel has apparently said “unlimited is unlimited”, so no caps on your data! That means you can actually use as much internet as you like, without being penalized! So when’s that going to roll out on your phones, AT&T?

I thought for the iPhone, an unlimited plan was also truly unlimited? It was my understanding that the only “unlimited” data plans that were capped at 5GB were the data plan only accounts (not including the iPad according to this news). I have also read (over at IntoMobile) that users would not be charged if they go over unless they do so on a consistent basis (which is difficult to do anyway even if you are tethering). This is a question I’m constantly bouncing back and forth between. I think I’m just going to tether my iPhone and download 5+GB worth of torrents and see what AT&T says.
I was told by multiple ATT reps (i asked at least 5 because i didn’t trust any of them) that the iphone’s data plan is indeed unlimited. I asked about a 5GB cap and they all said absolutely not, you can use 100GB if you want!
Wow I would think the writers would atleast get this right. The Iphone plan is truly unlimited. The data cards on ATT are what is capped at 5.
That’s exactly what I was told but then I had “one” rep tell me that yes it was indeed unlimited but there was a “soft” cap of 5GB and if you exceeded this limit multiple times then they would contact you to determine if/why you need so much data. Again it would take some serious effort to exceed this limit (for the average person). I believe their traditional data plans (that include a 5GB limit in writing) are no longer advertised as “unlimited” and haven’t been for some time. Either way it does not concern me as I would be lucky to even reach half that bandwidth per month.
I work for att customer care at Puerto rico iphone data is unlimited!!! what is 5gb cap is other data plans of regular phones and data connect card…. Iphone data right now its unlimited… (now my two cents as an att employe) But… its unlimited for using in the phone, if there is an excesive usage like using it for thetering and excesive downloads you could get a message for excesive usage, that’s why the phone have the capacity to connect you wifi for higher downloads or excesive usage, because you have to remember that is not only you… while you are using 3g for thetering or high usage you could be the problem why in your area so many people get dropped calls and poor service… now an as an iphone user it’s unlimited so you use it like you want untill they change it
the iPhone, an unlimited plan was also truly unlimited?
