BGR is reporting that AT&T is set to add an option for insuring the iPhone, but at a rather shocking price. The new insurance service, called MobileProtect, will start June 6, is designed specifically for the iPhone, and is run by Asurion. The price tag is $13.99/month, plus deductible of $99 to $199, depending on model, and you have to purchase it within 30 days of buying your iPhone. According to AT&T, “lack of iPhone insurance is a leading source of iPhone related customer complaints.” Somehow, I doubt that.
So you’ll be set back $168/year, plus a deductible, which is a rather high price. So, over a two year contract for a device with a $199 deductible, you would have to pay $534.99 to replace a broken iPhone — even though an unlocked, brand new, top of the line 3GS only costs $699.
AppleInsider wisely points out that a SquareTrade third party insurance only costs $9.99 a month.
The release date of this service, June 6, is the day before WWDC. Make of that what you will.
