AT&T is continuing their incredible run of making everyone on the planet hate them by killing off one of their two remaining text-message plans. Originally reported as a leak by Engadget and now confirmed by Ma Bell, the $10 for 1000 messages plan is evaporating, leaving $20 unlimited messages as the only plan left for individuals.
You can also use a pay as you go system, but that’ll cost you $0.20 per SMS and $0.30 for an MMS.
If you already have the older plan, you’ll be grandfathered in, but any new accounts will have to buy the $20 unlimited plan.
Here’s AT&T response:
“We regularly evaluate our offers and are making some adjustments to our messaging lineup.
Starting August 21, we’re streamlining our text messaging plans for new customers and will offer an unlimited plan for individuals for $20 per month and an unlimited plan for families of up to five lines for $30 per month. The vast majority of our messaging customers prefer unlimited plans and with text messaging growth stronger than ever, that number continues to climb among new customers. Existing customers don’t have to change any messaging plan they have today, even when changing handsets.”
Thanks for giving us even less choice about our plans, AT&T. Classy move.
This takes some of the zing away from iMessage…At least for those forced onto an unlimited plan
Please Hurry IOS 5. This is insane I can send an email and it uses data but when I send a txt msg with 20 characters or less it costs extra. Apple needs to release an android and blackberry iMessage app so then I wouldn’t even need texting. But I can already see if txt messaging fees ever go away data plan prices will only go up. Yeah Monopolies.
I just recently switched to unlimited texting becasue of the free mobile to mobile plan. Do the math switching to a cheaper voice plan with unlimited text saves me money instead of having the 900 minutes plan, I switched to the lowest plan.
