AT&T Begins Data Throttling

x7Y61 AT&T Begins Data ThrottlingOctober 1st. That’s the day AT&T was meant to start throttling heavy data users, and just one day before we’re seeing reports of the first messages being sent out to heavy data users. This message comes via Reddit, where one user skelatwork claims he was sent the message after passing 11GB of usage during his billing cycle — which may sound like a lot, but he wasn’t using it for anything too severe:

I listen to podcasts and Pandora while I drive to work. When I get to work, I occasionally Tether to bypass Fortiguard (web filtering). I wasn’t going to be ‘naughty’ until I discovered they had ESPN Fantasy Football blocked… Bastards.

Have any of our readers being sent this message? How much has it slowed you down to be put on AT&T’s blacklist? Let us know in the comments.

  1. I use roughly 3-4GB a month. No message here… I wonder what the minimum data usage is in order to be throttled. Did they say?

  2. I got
“AT&T Free Msg: Did you know tethering your Smartphone to a computer requires a tethering plan? Pls call 866-975-0004 for details or visit att.com/dataplans.”
I also got letter from AT&T that they will transfer my unlimited data plan to 4Gb tethering plan. I use iPhone 4G with 3.2.1 formware for ocasionally tethering and around 5-7Gb usage monthly.

  3. *transform (not transfer)

So 11 gig is the magic number right now eh? I called and asked them what a history number for the top 5% was and they couldn’t tell me. So it’s basically a moving target. There is no way to know what the top 5% is from month to month unless they publish numbers.
