UMPCfever.com posted a story early this morning showing purported pictures of the next-generation iPhone. As is usually the case with spy shots, the pictures are pretty fuzzy, showing mostly the screen without revealing the body of the phone - it’s claimed in the article that the prototype body can’t be revealed. What? Why bother taking spy shots if you can’t reveal the entire item itself, even when you have it in your hand?

Apple has started testing of push notification services on the iPhone. The new push notification system will allow 3rd party applications to push notifications to the user even when the application is not running. Think of push notifications as a low-impact replacement for multi-tasking.

Apple just released iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 and it appears things are moving along towards a public release. Apple sent an email to developers today indicating that all applications must be 3.0 compatible or they will not be approved.

Apple yesterday released the latest beta of iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 is available for download directly from Apple's developer support area for those taking part in Apple's Developer program. The latest version requires iTunes 8.2.

MMS support is no longer active, but it appears members of our iPhone forums have discovered a workaround that enables MMS support in Beta 5 (Note: This requires that you do not install the new iTunes 8.2 that comes with iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5).
