AT&T has announced today they are releasing a turn-by-turn GPS navigation application dubbed the AT&T Navigator. The app is currently available for $9.99 a month from Apple's App Store on the iPhone and iPod touch. AT&T is quoted below about their new product hitting the shelfs.

“AT&T Navigator has been one of our most popular and best-performing apps since we launched it last year,” said Mark Collins, vice president of voice and data products for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “With the new iPhone OS 3.0 software, we’re expanding the advantages of true turn-by-turn navigation – both voice and on-screen directions – to millions more customers. We’re bringing greater convenience to drivers and travelers nationwide, including providing regular, automatic updates to map information at no charge so customers have the latest at their fingertips.”

More signs today that AT&T might be looking to offer cheaper iPhone plans. Reports say that AT&T might introduce a new limited access plan that would shave $10 off the price of the current plan. The plan might be available sometime later this month. The price cut might be a result of Apple looking for the wireless carrier to offer more flexible pricing plans and AT&T's desire to continue being the exclusive carrier for the iPhone.

With more and more iPhones in circulation, that means more expensive data plans are being sold by AT&T and one would think a new revenue stream. Not so fast says the Wall St. Journal. They say "it's doubtful that new data revenues from web browsing and entertainment services will be profitable, as measured by return on capital spend." AT&T could be a victim of the success of the iPhone, as users continue to download bandwidth hogging applications. The result will be a need for AT&T to invest in their networks to support the steady stream of new iPhone users. Today's report certainly doesn't cast a positive light on the yet-to-be approved SlingPlayer for iPhone app, an app that streams video from a home set-top box.

According to analyst Michael Cote, an industry pricing strategist, AT&T is considering cutting the cost of the iPhone monthly service plan by $10. Cote says there is a "strong possibility" that AT&T will drop the entry level price from $69 to $59.

According to report today in USA Today, Apple and Verizon are in talks regarding the possible development of an iPhone for Verizon Wireless. As of now, the iPhone is only available on GSM networks in the US and abroad. The source claims Verizon has entered into "high level" discussions with Apple's management team a few months ago, while Steve Jobs was running the day to day business.

The Apple iPhone has in many ways been a savior for AT&T. Sure the company was doing fine, but the iPhone is responsible for the company seeing millions of new customers. Promises of a new iPhone as soon as June could see even more new AT&T customers and contract extensions for existing customers. When the iPhone was first announced, AT&T was announced as the exclusive carrier, but there were conflicting reports as to when the contract will end. Now comes word that AT&T is looking to extend their exclusivity deal with Apple through 2011.

According to a source within AT&T (via BGR), there will be an announcement regarding a new iPhone in mid-June. Last week, plenty of next generation iPhone rumors were making the rounds, but this appears to be the first real confirmation coming from a source within AT&T.
- New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device
- U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
- The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
- Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
- AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
- Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going
- They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone.
- Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
BGR has an excellent history of providing accurate information, so there is no reason to believe this isn't completely on point. The mid-June release date coincides with
WWDC, which runs June 9-13.
