A few Apple developers were poking around in the debugging menus and came accross a compass option. This would infer that the next generation iPhone will have a built-in mangnetometer. From the screenshots, it appears that Compass will be a full-fledged app. It's not clear if there will be compass support in Maps.
These screenshots are just further mounting evidence of a new iPhone, likely to make it's debut on June 8th.

Hot on the heels of today's story about Apple and Verizon talking about a new deal comes word of not one, but two iPhone-like devices that might find their way to Verizon. Business Week reports that Apple has created two prototype devices. One being a smaller, less expensive device being dubbed iPhone-lite. The other is a "media-pad" that would let users listen to music, view photos and watch HD videos. The latter would make calls over a WiFi connection only. One of the new iPhone devices could ship as early as this summer.
Odd report given the fact that Verizon usually opts out of including WiFi in their devices. Now they would be releasing a device that was solely based on WiFi?

According to a report on Phonenews, Apple might be looking at adding high definition playback capabilities to the next generation iPhone. Anyone up for iPhone HD? Apple has recently cleared out their inventory of Apple Composite AV Cables and Apple Component AV Cables. They speculate confirmed this is in preparation for a new consolidated cable that will support HD in the next generation iPhone. The new cable would support HD video output of 720p and 1080i.
In essence, the iPhone HD would become a portable AppleTV of sorts. Dock your next generation iPhone next to your high definition TV and have full AppleTV capabilities. AppleTV is one of the few products from Cupertino that hasn't been a big success. Enabling AppleTV features on an iPhone HD would help the company boost video rentals and sales.

Taiwan's DigitTimes reports that OmniVision, a camera sensor manufacturer, has received an order from Apple to supply 3.2-megapixel image sensors for the next iPhone model expected this summer. They also state that Apple has ordered 5-megapixel sensors for another Apple device that will be released later this year.
A 3.2-megapixel sensor will put the new iPhone on par with many touchscreen-only smartphone competitors, like the Blackberry Storm, HTC Touch Diamond, and the upcoming Palm Pre and HTC Magic/G2. The existing 2-megapixel camera in the current iPhone 3G and first-generation iPhone, combined with its lack of an auto-focus lens and settings adjustments, has been a disappointment to many users. An improvement in the next iPhone's camera specs will be greatly appreciated, particularly since rumors also point to the ability to record video in the next iPhone.

According to a source within AT&T (via BGR), there will be an announcement regarding a new iPhone in mid-June. Last week, plenty of next generation iPhone rumors were making the rounds, but this appears to be the first real confirmation coming from a source within AT&T.
- New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device
- U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
- The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
- Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
- AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
- Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going
- They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone.
- Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
BGR has an excellent history of providing accurate information, so there is no reason to believe this isn't completely on point. The mid-June release date coincides with
WWDC, which runs June 9-13.

A report from CNNMoney citing two people close to the situation states Apple intends to launch a netbook computer with a touch screen monitor as early as the second half of this year. The Apple netbook will reportedly have screens between 9.7 inches and 10 inches. That would fit neatly between the iPhone/iPod touch and the MacBook. Functions and specs are still yet to be determined.
