According to report today in USA Today, Apple and Verizon are in talks regarding the possible development of an iPhone for Verizon Wireless. As of now, the iPhone is only available on GSM networks in the US and abroad. The source claims Verizon has entered into "high level" discussions with Apple's management team a few months ago, while Steve Jobs was running the day to day business.

AT&T's iPhone exclusive runs through 2010, but it's not clear when exactly that deal ends. AT&T had been looking to extend the exclusive, most likely in an attempt to prevent Verizon from carrying the iPhone. AT&T signed up 1.6 million iPhone users last quarter, with 40% coming from another wireless carrier. Clearly, the iPhone exclusive has resulted in a large percentage of users who are switching wireless providers for the iPhone. Losing this competitive edge would be very detrimental to AT&T.
