Earlier this week, planetbeing, a member of the iPhone DevTeam, ported the Linux 2.6 kernel to the iPhone and iPod touch. This is something that has been being worked on for quite a while, as it opens up the possibility to run other OS's, such as Windows Mobile and Android on the iPhone.

Currently, you can only install Linux on the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and original iPod touch. Unfortunately, several drivers are missing, so there's a list of things that don't yet work. These are the touchscreen, sound, accelerometer, wireless networking, baseband support, or write support for the NAND. As you can see, this renders Linux on the iPhone pretty useless right now, but nevertheless, this is a big step towards running other OS's on the device.
