Has Apple already sold over 10 million iPhones?

Some members of The Mac Observer's Apple Finance Board have made an effort to determine how many iPhones Apple has sold, and it was revealed that the company may have already reached it's goal of selling 10 million units in 2008.

The board has been tracking IMEI numbers of new iPhone 3G's since late June. This spreadsheet shows the number of 3G's produced and shipped, ending yesterday , October 5th, 2008, at a number of 9,190,680. When you take into account the number of devices that were returned, destroyed, or are still in inventory, reaching about 1.5 million iPhones, add in the existing 7.7 million 3G's, and the 2.42 already existing devices, the number is pushed beyond 10 million total iPhones. Whether or not these estimates are correct, we will not know until Apple's next financial call on October 21st.
