AppleTV Becomes iTV, Gets Apps?

Engadget is reporting that the oft neglected AppleTV is about to undergo a major change, and will be brought into the iOS fold. It’ll be rebranded the iTV, will cost $99, and will have the same internals as an iPhone 4 — A4 CPU, 16GB of flash storage. With it will come a new iTunes streaming service, and the ability to run apps.

There is one big downside, though: it’ll only be able to handle 720p output. Says Engadget:

Instead it will only push out 720p clips. The word — and cause for much internal debate, we’re told — is that this has something to do with the A4′s inability to crank on higher resolution content, but we don’t see how that’s possible considering the iPhone 3GS could play back full HD video.

Using the name iTV could be problematic, as a very promenant British television channel uses that name, and has done since 1955. Given Apple’s disregard for trademark on iOS and iPhone, I don’t think it’ll phase them.
