Apple’s New iPhone Dock Connector To Feature Only 8 Pins

A new report this morning from iLounge, who based on two sources, claim the new iPhone dock will be just 8 pins. The current dock connector is a behemoth at 30 pins, but recent reports had the new smaller dock being 19 pins. Apparently Apple had received a patent on what appeared to be a 19-pin or 16-pin dock connector, which could simply be the adapter we will all inevitably need.

The reasons for Apple’s move to a smaller dock connector are plentiful. The smaller dock enables more room inside for components. With expectations of a larger display and support for 4G LTE, the need for a larger battery exists. This move also facilitates moving the headphone jack from the top to the bottom of the iPhone 5. While that move does not appear to be popular, we’ve seen it on several of the latest parts leaks.

Today’s report does provide some insight as to new features of the new dock. One of the sources says the orientation of the charger will not matter, similar to the MagSafe.

  1. anyone else hate the way the bottom of the iphone looks? too crowded and it’s not symmetrical >.<;

  2. Yeah, I don’t think it looks well. Crunched up, 5 speaker holes on one side and 8 on the other? Not symettical at all.
    Can this really be the next iPhone? Especially from what we know about Apple and their designers? Its got to be a wider phone coming and glass from edge to edge. (please? at least). There needs to be a redesign. Who wants the same old thing?

  3. I don’t know why they ever had a 30 pin connector. Looking at my cable I only see 6 actual pins in the slots.

  4. I like how the bottom looks. The little holes next to the earphone jack would be the microphone. And the other holes would be for the much needed bigger speaker.
