Apple To Redesign Dock Connector For iPhone 5?

According to the folks at iMore, Apple is prepping to revamp the dock connector with the iPhone 5, shrinking it down into a “micro dock” to make more room for internal components.

If Apple were to redesign the dock connection, the iPhone 5 would be when to do it. It’s an expected major physical redesign anyway, so this would add to the laundry list of changes that’ll probably happen. Since every square centimeter is crucial inside an iPhone, a smaller dock connector allows more space for everything else. Also, at that point, we’ll all have been using WiFi Syncing for quite some time, so there will doubtless be less of an emphasis on syncing via cable.

The downside of this is that it would kill compatibility with a lot of accessories — but that’s something you face with every major redesign.

What do you think? Should Apple overhaul the dock connector? Should they kill it all together for inductive charing and WiFi sync?

I can see why they may need to do that, but in order to dodge an enormous backlash from their devout customers, they should also make a small adapter to fit the old accessories that is included with the phone at no extra charge.

  2. I’m with you on the need for an adapter, I think they’d have to make one.

Not sure why you question Apple for pondering this change or why they would do this.
My question is what happens to the iPad connector?
