Apple Suspending Sales Of Scratch-Causing Cases?

According to Cult of Mac, Apple has stopped selling a number of cases that can cause cracks and scrapes to the back of your iPhone. The horribly termed “glassgate” problem occurs if you have a slider case, and trapped dirt causes damage to the fragile rear of your iPhone. Their source told them:

“Glassgate is a real problem. Apple is not approving slide-on cases right now for its stores.”

Even if the cases have been approved through the “Made for iPhone” program, Apple isn’t putting them up on shelves, which could cause a major problem in the incredibly profitable holiday season.

Because the rear of the phone isn’t made of the same super-strong Gorilla Glass as the front, it’s more prone to damage, as might be caused by the repeated sliding on and off of a case. Apple is now individually trying out these cases, and approving them one at a time.

Have you had any trouble with glass damage on the rear of your iPhone 4 using a slider case? Let us know in the comments.

“Horribly termed”… agreed. Who leaves dirt on their case just prior to sliding on a new case? I think we’d see more complaints in the forums if this issue had legs.
