Apple had been under pressure from a number of countries to remove the 4G branding. In Australian Competition and Consumer Commission took issue with the 4G labeling. The bandwidths in Australia are incompatible with the iPad WiFi + 4G, which could be confusing for consumers expecting to receive 4G data speeds. The momentum from this movement led to probes in the UK and New Zealand. This led to Apple offering to email owners providing them an opportunity to return their iPad for a refund.
Apple attempted to use Jedi mind tricks, claiming that Australia’s 3G is technically 4G. They had also attempted to add a small blurb on the Australian Apple Store, but that wasn’t enough to quell the discontent. Today we see Apple has finally relented, making a major change to the naming convention. The 4G model is now shown on the Apple Store as Wi-Fi + Cellular.
