Apple has put out a press release saying what we all suspected — that the iPhone 5 sold incredibly well over its opening weekend. Just how well? 5 million units, which is pretty damned good.
Apple® today announced it has sold over five million of its new iPhone® 5, just three days after its launch on September 21, and more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated with iOS 6, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system.
In comparison, the iPhone 4S sold 4 million in the same period, and the iPhone 4 was a relatively piddling 1.7 milllion.
This puts Apple on track for yet another bumper year of insane iPhone sales, and doubtless likewise for the iPad Mini (if that ends up being an actual thing).
Apple also made a statement on the availability of iPhone 5 pre-orders, saying “Demand for iPhone 5 exceeded the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders have been shipped to customers, many are scheduled to be shipped in October.”
