Apple Saves, Stores Location Data

Apple was questioned by Congress about the way it handles user location data, after an LA Times piece where the company admitted to collecting precise location information from its users. Reps. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Joe L. Barton (R-Texas) sent Apple a list of questions, to which Apple responded in document form.

Any location data that is gathered (which comes from iPhones, iPads, Macs running Snow Leopard, and Windows or Macs running the Safari 5 Web browser to a lesser degree) is stored in batches, anonymized, encrypted, and transmitted to Apple once every 12 hours.

Does this strike you as a privacy issue? If you turn of location services on your iPhone, this data isn’t gathered. Seeing as its completely anonymous, do you find in intrusive? Let us know in the comments.

I can definitely see how many people would find this intrusive but if it truly IS anonymous then I don’t see any problem with it at all. If you had an extremely popular product that relies heavily on reception and location then having that type of information would be invaluable! Not to mention they give users the option to disable it completely. :) I think a lot of people are simply too paranoid these days. Sure there may be some good reasons to be paranoid but it’s nothing to let rule your life and get all worked up over. There’s more to life than your smartphone and where you are located every 12 hours. :P

I don’t care if Apple knows where I am. They aren’t going to hunt me down and find me.

i doubt Apple will become ‘Cyberdine’ and begin producing iPhone 9 Terminators to attack mankind. this could even be a good way to help locate missing persons, criminals, or terrorists.

I think it’s a little stange, I don’t think they should have that sort of power over us.

It’s nobodies business to know where I am unless I specifically tell them.

BS!!! It said all data for apps using your location. And its all up to you whether you give permission to these apps installed on your iDevice.

In a business aspect think that it is a smart thing that apple is doing that. It let’s the company know wheee they need to ship more product to, or where sells are low at. Once that information is gathered they then know what types of business strategies that they need to make, which areas products are most popular in and so on. I think there is nothing to worry about and that is harmless as far as a personal note, and it is not a privacy issue. Here are not collecting any personal information, just usage statistics; which will make sure that everyone gets there share of he apple.
