9 to 5 Mac is reporting that Apple has bought up the small Bluetooth wireless headphone creator Wi-Gear for an undisclosed sum. The San Francisco based company made three generations of Bluetooth stereo headsets and a Bluetooth 2.0 adaptor for devices that didn’t support the newer standard.
The company is now closed.
Their source states that Apple bought up the company to use their expertise to build Apple’s own Bluetooth headphones. Wi-Gear co-founder Michael Kim who now is an iOS Bluetooth Engineer at Apple.
My only complaint about this is that Bluetooth headphones are generally pretty poor audio quality, but Apple’s bundled white earbuds are notoriously bad too, so there wouldn’t be much of a change.

I have always wondered why apple has not taken interest in this. They have the number one portable music player in the iPod and iPhone devices. And now the iPad can be added to that list. Hopefully it will be better then the crap they offer now but I doubt it. They will look awesome and sound like sh* t i’m sure. They could team up with Kleer, another company in Cupentino that offers a alternative to Bluetooth and is uncompressed.
