Hidden inside Apple’s recent discussion of location data was a very interesting tidbit that we missed when first reading, but has since lit the blogosphere afire:
8. What other location data is Apple collecting from the iPhone besides crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data?
Apple is now collecting anonymous traffic data to build a crowd-sourced traffic database with the goal of providing iPhone users an improved traffic service in the next couple of years.
Which means that Apple’s looking at making a traffic application, possible in the form of a turn-by-turn GPS app. If you look at Google’s Navigation app for Android, it already does this, pulling in traffic info from other users to let you know how bad conditions are — and Maps.app for iOS does show traffic info.
I’m going to be very curious to see what Apple has up their sleeves with this.
