Apple Officially Licenses Swiss Clock Design

If you’ve ever visited Switzerland, you’ve no doubt noticed an iconic piece of design that graces all their train stations. The Swiss national railway (SBB) clock is a famous piece of industrial design, made and sold by Mondaine. It’s also a design that Apple used without permission in the iPad version of the Clock app for iOS 6.

Marked by wide hands, an absence of numbers, and a distinctive circle at the end of the second hand, you can’t deny that Apple borrowed the design. Thankfully, Apple has now licensed the design of the clock from SBB.

There’s no indication of how much Apple is paying for the rights, but I’m glad to see them doing the right thing in this situation (though it should have really been done in advance of release).
