According to an unconfirmed report on BBC 5Live via our forums, iPhone 4 users in the UK who complain about the “left hand lost signal” issue are being given a free Apple bumper case. Last night, Apple confirmed the issue whereby the iPhone 4 will lose signal bars when holding the phone a certain way. Apple suggests you avoid gripping the lower left hand corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band or simply use one of the many available cases.
UPDATE: Just received word this was on the Victoria Derbyshire Show from 10:00 to 12:00.
If this turns out to be true, we’re thinking this courtesy will be extended to customers in the US. Perhaps the next batch will include the bumper case, so Apple can put this matter to bed.
Anyone else in the UK get a free bumper case from Apple? Let us know in the comments.

This will be a PROBLEM if confirmed.. Apple Stores in the US better get ready. LOL
It will be interesting to see if this does pan out. We’ve got a senior member posting this report. While it’s still unconfirmed (and we noted this in the story), it certainly would not be surprising to see this happen. I’m saving my receipts for the two bumper cases I purchased yesterday.
Naturally, after I pay for mine…interesting.
All I have to say is the reception on the new iPhone 4 is complete crap. One would think they would have known about this issue. I’ve had my phone in a case and still getting horrible reception. I’m almost to the point of saying bye bye iPhone 4. This is just horrible. My reception is worse than the first generation iPhone. My new phone stays at 1 bar 99% of the time. Freakin terrible.
I really haven’t had any issues at all with my reception. Full service just about every where I am. Its amazing how spotty this issue is.
Yea I bought one as well. I assume a refund would be in order
I will call apple if confirmed and as for a credit for the one I already bought.
A bumper is not a fix. even with a case people have reported a drop from five bars to 2 or 3 bars.
That is still an issue because what if your in an area with only two bars…you’re done!!!
I just did a test with the Griffin Reveal case and I found that the same problem is still there even with a rubber bumper type case. I do not have the same complaints as many of you since I use a bluetooth of headphones most of the time.
i baught 2 phones one for me and one for boyfriend and both have the signal issue, its terrable cant make no call without it cutting out such a pain. rang apple just now and was told to “bear with it:”!! the cheak! so just on hold now for the supervisor.phone is lovely just a shame i cant use it as a “phone”
I personally think it is faulty hardware for certain individuals. I have had no problems with mine….in fact, I’ve had the opposite effect. At my work building I am on the 12th floor, and with my 3GS I couldn’t keep a 3G signal all day nor could I receive or make calls from it….and now with my 4, I get a very good signal all day (AND can make & receive calls).
No problem here in Washington, I’m not running a case yet because They are sold out everywhere. Signal is 4 to 5 bars. It does drop off but if I move without changing how I’m holding the phone they come back. I think the network is really busy right now like it always is around launch time. My iphone 4 seems great. There is no way a first gen iPhone gets better reception don’t be stupid, your just high!
Hi there, I just called up Apple’s support team from the UK and made an enquiry about the antenna issue. I just got told to put a rubber case around the phone – but did not get offered one from Apple themselves. So I’m not sure whether or not they are giving them out for free unfortunately!
