Apple’s iPhone 3G S saw higher than expected sales over the weekend and as result, there were widespread iPhone activation issues. As we’ve seen with previous releases, AT&T and Apple have had trouble providing customers with a smooth activation process. Apple is said to be investigating issues that led to customers to have to wait up to 48 hours for activation of their new iPhone 3G S. Both parties seemed to either be surprised by demand or not prepared. Understanding the frustration experienced by their customers, Apple has sent out apologies via email that include a $30 iTunes Gift Certificate.
The complete text of the email reads:
*Dear Apple Customer,

On Monday, you’ll receive an email from Apple with an iTunes Store credit in
the amount of $30. We hope you will enjoy this gift and accept our sincere
apologies for the inconvenience this delay has caused.
Thank you for choosing Apple.

While it’s certainly nice to see Apple offer a credit, I’m sure most would rather have a working iPhone. While it would be easy enough to blame AT&T, it is a bit surprising that Apple is issuing a credit. Perhaps this was an issue with Apple’s servers failing due to unexpected brisk sales of the iPhone 3G S. In any event, keep an eye on your inbox for your iTunes gift certificate and here’s hoping things go smoother with the next iPhone release.
