Apple Kills Off Chomp Search Engine

In February of this year, Apple purchased the app search engine Chomp, and used it to find better results in the overhauled version of the App Store and iTunes. Now that things look totally different when searching for apps in iOS 6, Apple has completely killed off the standalone Chomp app.

The Chomp app is no longer in the App Store, and people who already have the app are informed when launching it that the service is no longer being run.

This is hardly a surprise. The current App Store results page looks identical to Chomp’s, and with iTunes 11 the same search algorithms will be added to the desktop version. Still, it’s always sad to see an app bought out by a larger company, and then killed off.

  1. Apple owns Chomp. It was the best place to research apps and it is now what we see in the App Store. I will miss Chomp but on the other hand, it is now the app store so it really didnt go anywhere.
