In Japan, many stores traditionally sell fukubukuro or “lucky bags” in the New Years, a cut price grabbag of merchandise from the store, guaranteed to have some savings, and potentially hold something super valuable. Apple is no exception, and this year the Apple fukubukuro will be on sale on January 2.

The Apple bags aren’t cheap, going for 33,000 yen (around $386) — but with the chance of getting a new iPad or MacBook, it’s hardly surprising that people are willing to line up overnight in the cold. For a look at some of the loot from previous years, check out this post by Macotakara, and for an idea of just how mad the annual tradition can be, have a gander at this.

I’d love to see this same tradition happen in the rest of the world, but can you imagine the lines? It’d be suicide trying to get in one. It’d be like trying to grab a Woot Random Bag of Crap, but in real life.
