If you want a testament to just how much the iPad has altered the landscape of the “personal computer” look at this report from Canalysis. According to their numbers, Apple has surged past HP to capture 19.4% of the PC market, making it the biggest single manufacturer around — and you can bet that isn’t because Macs are selling really well.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Canalysis make this argument — last year Apple was at third place using similar metrics, and earlier this year they gave Apple the #1 spot as “the leading worldwide client PC vendor.” That earlier report put Apple at 17%, but it then lost that spot to HP.
Since tablets are considered PCs by this research, overall shipments rose 12% this year, and tablets were up 75% to 24 million units, representing 22% of all PCs.
