Apple Hires NFC Expert, Pay By Phone On The Way?

Near Field Communications is a technology that allows your cellphone to communicate with other hardware just by proximity, and Apple is getting involved in a big way. They’ve just hired Benjamin Vigier, an expert in the field, with a truckload of experience in mobile payments:

Most recently Vigier was product manager for mobile wallet, payment and NFC at US mobile payments specialist mFoundry. There he conceived and managed both the PayPal Mobile service and Starbucks’ barcode-based mobile payments service and was also responsible for the development of mobile wallet applications for two top US mobile network operators and an NFC wallet application for a top three US bank.

Apple is notorious for taking their sweet time with any major new technology, but I cannot wait for the ability to pay for goods and services just by swiping my iPhone.

This is a nice advancement, but there is no way I will be handing my fragile iPhone 4 to some young teenager at the grocery store….. If it accidentally drops, who’s fault is that?

    • Not to worry… it’s in your hand at all times. Why would you have to hand it to a clerk? I’ve used Starbuck’s system and its pretty neat.
