Analytics company Gartner has published a report, tracking marketshare around the world for different cellphone brands. Apple continues its steady growth, and has made substantial gains since last year.
Smartphones now make up 19% of phones worldwide, and Apple is coming in fourth place in that race, with 14.2% of the market, up from 13% a year ago. In this same sector, Android has skyrocketed, from 1.2% a year ago, to 17.2% today. When you have dozens of handsets from a number of manufacturers, it’s something of an advantage.
For all phones, smart and dumb, iPhones comes in seventh place, roughly equal with Motorola, and up from 1.9% a year ago to 2.7% presently. Said Gartner:
Apple’s sales would have been higher if it had not had to face tight inventory management in preparation for the arrival of the iPhone 4 at the end of the second quarter of 2010. Apple also suffered from some supply constraint on the new device. We expect that a wider global rollout of iPhone 4 will sustain Apple’s sales momentum throughout the second half of 2010.
