According to research firm IDC, Apple is continuing to grow impressively in the smartphone arena, and is closing in on Nokia’s #1 spot in the field. The entire field is growing, and even the struggling Nokia shipped more units this year than they did last, but they can’t keep up with the almost 80% industry growth rate. Apple’s improvement was 114%, which is might impressive and closed the gap further between the #1 and #2 positions, but Samsung and HTC both had even greater increases.

Apple reached a new record shipment volume in a single quarter, and inched closer to market leader Nokia with fewer than six million units separating the two companies. The company posted market-beating year-over-year growth and recorded triple-digit growth in two key markets: the United States, with the release of its CDMA-enabled iPhone, and Greater China. Additionally, the company enlisted South Korean Telecom and Saudi Telecom as carrier providers of the iPhone.

The only two companies in the top five who haven’t been able to keep up with the rest of the industry are Nokia and Blackberry, both of whom are struggling to retain customers.
