A new iPhone related Kickstarter project is making waves, and all but instantly hit its funding goals. The AL13 is a rather gorgeous looking colored aluminum case that takes its cues from Apple’s own bumper design. The design team set out to make a case that looked good, offered edge protection, and is vaguely affordable — and with a $55 pricetag, it’s up to you if it is or not.
I have to admit, this is a well designed and interesting looking case. It includes a rubber lining to offer impact protection, and a slide-in screen protector.
But here’s what’s bugging me about this project — and Kickstarter in general. They’re aiming for a March release — which, having backed a bunch of kickstarter projects, will probably mean something considerably later. Thankfully, the iPhone 5S probably won’t be a different design, but other Kickstarters have been caught out by Apple changing the way a design looks out from under them.
This also isn’t a hugely unique idea. There are other metal bumpers of varying price and quality. I just hope that they manage to prevent the signal loss that has marred some metal bumpers — hopefully the rubber lining should prevent that.
