If you recently started adding calendars in iOS in attempts to get more organized, you may find yourself a bit dismayed at the lack of holidays. Since most of us schedule vacations, time-off and other events around holidays, it makes perfect sense to include them on your calendar. Apple sells products worldwide, so they cannot push holidays to your calendar, simply because they don’t know which holidays you celebrate. Since the majority of our readership is in the United States, here’s how to add U.S. holidays to your calendar on iPhone and iPad.
Some of you may have created a new calendar and started to manually add events. That will get the job done, but it’s not a good use of your time and does handle dates well into the future. For this purpose, we’ll want to subscribe to an existing calendar. Let’s allow Apple to do the heavy lifting. There are two ways to accomplish this task, either using your iPhone, iPad or your Mac. We’ll start with the iPhone method, but if you are a Mac user, I’d recommend jumping to that tutorial. It’s much easier to subscribe to calendars on a Mac.
How to subscribe to U.S. holidays on iPhone and iPad
- Navigate to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars
- Select ‘Add Account’
- Tap on ‘Other’
- Under the CALENDARS header, select Add Subscribed Calendar.
- Type webcal://files.apple.com/calendars/US32Holidays.ics and press Next.
- Here you can make a change to the name of the calendar. Once finished, press Save at the top right.
How to subscribe to holidays or calendars on a Mac
Apple hosts all sorts of calendars, including holidays in the U.S. and other countries.
- Open Safari and browse to Apple’s US Holidays download.
- Click on the ‘Download’ link.
- The Calendar app on your Mac will open and a pop-up will show the URL of the calendar subscription. Click on Subscribe.
How to find international holidays
If you are outside of the U.S. or travel abroad, you might be looking to add holidays in other countries. Check out iCalShare for international holidays. The directions are the same, but replace the URL with the associated calendar for the country selected.
The Calendar app can be the hub for individuals looking to get organized. If you are using your Calendar for personal, business or both, having holidays listed will help you with your scheduling. You can add holidays using either a Mac or directly on your iPhone or iPad. With iCloud syncing, your recent subscription to U.S. Holidays will populate across all of your iOS devices and your Mac.
