Accessory Makers Worried About New Dock Connector

With a new, much smaller, dock connector in the works, accessory makers are facing the very real possibility that they won’t be able to accomodate the new part in time for the Christmas rush. iLounge is reporting that Apple has not given any third-party developers access to components or engineering specifications for the new dock connector.

Without this information, it’s impossible for the manufacturers to create hardware to work with the new dock — at least if you’re making cases, you can get enough information from leaks to make something fit right, but the dock connector requires significant engineering work to properly function. And if they don’t get this information soon, the companies won’t be able to get their accessories manufactured in time for the Christmas rush — given Apple a monopoly for these goods.

If the only gadgets to play with your new iPhone and iPad Mini’s dock come direct from Apple, you know that Apple will rake it in over the Christmas season, and there’s next to nothing third-party manufacturers can do about it.

  1. I don’t ever buy genuine Apple products. They are too overpriced. I have no problem waiting a month or two for third party accessories.
